Check Live Voltage on PZ410 Power Screen
CHECKNavigate to Power Screen Page 1 to see current generator voltage on all phases. This helps distinguish a real overvoltage condition from a sensor or wiring false alarm.
Do not get left in the dark!
Generac PZ410
Output voltage more than 10% above nominal. AVR or wiring fault.
Need a technician now? Skip the troubleshooting — open a service ticket and we'll handle it.
⚠SAFETY FIRST: Always press OFF on the PZ410 before inspecting components — this prevents automatic starts. Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before touching wiring. This generator can auto-start.
Overview
Output voltage more than 10% above nominal. AVR or wiring fault.
AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) failure or loss of control
Sudden large load shed causing voltage spike
Faulty AVR feedback wiring or DPE sensing circuit (J1 AVR connector)
Incorrect AVR voltage setpoint parameter
Failed excitation winding in the rotor (AVR cannot regulate properly)
Short circuit in the voltage sensing circuit
Controller firmware issue
Step-by-step workflow
Navigate to Power Screen Page 1 to see current generator voltage on all phases. This helps distinguish a real overvoltage condition from a sensor or wiring false alarm.
The PZ410's AVR function uses the J1 connector (4-pin: Field+, Field-, DPE1, DPE2). Loose or corroded connections here can disrupt voltage regulation.
If the voltage setpoint was accidentally changed (Settings → Adjust Voltage), the generator may be commanded to produce voltage above nominal.
If wiring and setpoint are confirmed correct, clear the alarm and monitor voltage on Power Screen Page 1 closely after restart.
After reset
The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.
If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.
Prevention
Inspect J1 AVR connector and DPE wiring at every annual service — vibration loosens these connections.
Confirm voltage setpoint is correct during every maintenance visit — especially after firmware updates.

Generac firmware updates occasionally address AVR regulation behavior. Update via Settings → Firmware Update.
PZ410 Info Screen → Alarm Log shows historical codes — recurring overvoltage suggests AVR degradation.
