Safety first

⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Always press OFF on the PZ410 before inspecting components — this prevents automatic starts. Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before touching wiring. This generator can auto-start.

Overview

What 1600 means

RPM below 83.3% of target for 30 seconds. Overload or fuel issue.

Generator overloaded — connected load exceeds rated kW

Highly inductive load startup surge (central A/C compressor, well pump, large motor)

Insufficient fuel pressure — gas pressure dropping under load

Governor actuator fault — cannot maintain speed under load

Dirty air filter — engine starved for air under load

Low fuel pressure — propane below 20% or NG pressure drop

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

Immediately Shed Large Loads

ACTION

Go to your electrical panel and turn OFF breakers for the largest appliances: central A/C, electric dryer, electric range, well pump. The PZ410 monitor on the Power Screen shows live kW — check if you are near or over rated capacity.

Navigate to Power Screen Page 3 on the PZ410 to see Gen. kW in real time. The XG32 is rated 32 kW, XG40 is 40 kW, XG48 is 48 kW. Keep connected load below 80% of rated output for sustained operation. Highly inductive loads (motors) draw 2–3× their rated current at startup.
2

Check Fuel Supply Under Load

CHECK

Fuel pressure drops under heavy load — especially propane in cold weather or when the tank is below 20%.

For propane: tank must be above 25% for adequate vapor pressure under full load. Cold weather significantly reduces propane vaporization. For natural gas: confirm supply pressure at the generator — heavy load draws more gas than a pressure-limited supply can provide.
3

Inspect Air Filter

ACTION

A clogged air filter causes the engine to lose power under load as it cannot breathe sufficiently.

Remove and inspect the air filter. If visibly dirty, grey, or clogged — replace it. Paper elements cannot be effectively cleaned — replace only. XG series air filter replacement is straightforward via the front service panel.
4

Clear Alarm and Add Loads Gradually

RESET

After shedding loads and checking fuel, clear the alarm and restart with reduced load. Add loads back one at a time.

Alarm Screen → ↑/↓ → STOP + ENTER → press AUTO. Monitor Power Screen Page 3 (kW) and Engine Screen Page 1 (RPM) as you add loads back. If underspeed returns with minimal load — governor or fuel delivery issue requires professional service.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Best practices and next checks

Know Your Load Profile

Compare your critical load panel's total kW draw to the generator's rated output. Keep below 80%.

Maintain Fuel Supply

Propane above 25%, NG pressure tested annually. Fuel starvation under load is a top Underspeed cause.

Install Smart Management Modules

Generac SMMs automatically manage large loads to prevent overload — ideal for whole-home backup.

Replace Air Filter Annually

A clean air filter ensures the engine can produce full rated power under load.
