Safety first

⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Always press OFF on the PZ410 before inspecting components — this prevents automatic starts. Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before touching wiring. This generator can auto-start.

Overview

What 1200 / 1205 / 1208 means

Engine exceeded 72 Hz (prolonged) or 75 Hz (instantaneous). Check governor wiring.

Broken, loose, or disconnected throttle/governor stepper wire (code 1205)

Governor motor failure or stuck throttle body

Sudden large load shed causing RPM spike

Incorrect governor gain parameters (IASD adjustment required)

Fuel pressure surge — propane regulator issue

DPE (voltage regulator) sensing fault triggering false overspeed (1208)

Firmware issue — update may be required

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

Do Not Immediately Restart — Listen First

CHECK

Did the engine sound unusually loud or rev up before shutting down? This indicates a true mechanical overspeed — the governor could not control RPM.

If yes (engine revved loudly) → governor/throttle fault — do not restart until inspected. If no (shutdown seemed sudden and quiet) → may be a sensor or firmware false alarm. Note the specific E-code displayed (1200, 1205, or 1208) — this guides diagnosis.
2

Inspect Throttle/Governor Wiring (Code 1205 Priority)

ACTION

Code 1205 specifically calls out a broken stepper wire. With the generator in OFF mode and battery disconnected, inspect the wiring harness running to the throttle body / governor motor.

Look for: disconnected connectors, chafed or broken wires, loose terminals. The throttle stepper wiring typically runs from the PZ410 controller board (J2 throttle connector) to the throttle body. Any break in this harness will cause uncontrolled throttle and overspeed.
3

Check Governor Linkage (if mechanical)

ACTION

On units with a mechanical governor component, inspect the governor arm, spring, and linkage rod for loose pins, broken springs, or binding.

All linkage pins should be secured with clips. The governor spring must be intact and correctly seated. A disconnected spring allows the throttle to open uncontrolled.
4

Clear the Alarm and Test with No Load

RESET

If wiring and linkage are confirmed secure, clear the alarm and attempt a controlled restart with no load connected.

Alarm Screen → ↑/↓ to scroll → STOP + ENTER to clear → press AUTO. Listen carefully: engine should settle to a steady 3600 RPM (60 Hz) within 10–15 seconds. Any surging, hunting, or acceleration → shut down immediately and contact A&A Power Generators.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Prevention

Best practices and next checks

Annual Wiring Harness Inspection

Vibration over time loosens harness connectors and chafes wires. Check throttle body wiring at every annual service.

Governor Inspection Annually

Throttle body and governor motor inspection should be part of every scheduled maintenance visit.

Listen During Exercise Runs

Any surging, hunting, or uneven RPM during the weekly test is an early overspeed warning.

Keep Firmware Current

Generac periodically releases firmware updates that address false overspeed trigger thresholds. Update via PZ410 Settings → Firmware Update.

Enable Mobile Link Alerts
