Safety first

âš  SAFETY FIRST: Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before inspecting internal components. Never work on a generator that may auto-start.

Overview

What 1300 means

Oil pressure dropped below the safe operating threshold. Check oil level and sensor.

Low oil level — most common cause (oil burns off or leaks over time)

Wrong oil viscosity for operating temperature

Oil has degraded and lost viscosity (overdue oil change)

Faulty or stuck oil pressure sensor (false alarm)

Blocked oil filter or oil passage

Internal engine oil leak

Oil pump failure (rare)

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

CHECK OIL LEVEL IMMEDIATELY

CHECK

Before anything else, check the engine oil level with the dipstick. The generator must be OFF and on level ground. Low oil is the most common cause and the simplest fix.

Oil level must be between MIN and MAX on the dipstick. Do not overfill. Use the correct oil type per your owner's manual (typically 5W-30 or 10W-30 for air-cooled units). If oil is BLACK or has a burnt smell — it needs to be changed, not just topped off.
2

Inspect for Oil Leaks

CHECK

Check around the engine, oil drain plug, oil filter, valve cover gasket, and beneath the generator for signs of oil drips or pooling. A slow leak can drain oil between exercise cycles.

Common leak points: oil drain plug (loose or stripped), oil filter (not torqued correctly), valve cover gasket (dried out and cracked on older units), front crankshaft seal.
3

Check Oil Condition & Change if Needed

ACTION

Degraded oil loses viscosity and cannot maintain adequate pressure. If the oil is very dark, smells burnt, or the generator has exceeded its service interval, an oil change is required.

Generac recommends an oil change every 200 hours of operation or at least once per year. Always replace the oil filter at the same time. Use the correct viscosity for your climate.
4

Test the Oil Pressure Sensor

ACTION

If oil level is confirmed correct and fresh, the sensor itself may be faulty. A defective sensor can trigger a Low Oil Pressure shutdown on an engine with perfectly normal pressure.

Disconnect the oil pressure sensor wire and attempt a brief start. If the alarm no longer triggers, the sensor is likely faulty and should be replaced. WARNING: Only do this with confirmed correct oil level — never run with a known low oil condition.
5

Clear the Fault & Restart

RESET

After correcting oil level, performing an oil change, or replacing the sensor — clear the fault code.

Evolution: Press OFF/Reset. Nexus: Press OFF → Enter. Do not attempt to restart before confirming the oil level is correct.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Prevention

Best practices and next checks

Check Oil Level Monthly

Check the dipstick monthly and before every storm season. Never let oil drop below the MIN mark.

Annual Oil & Filter Change

Change oil and filter every 200 hours or annually. Use the correct viscosity. Old oil loses pressure-holding ability.

Inspect for Leaks Annually

Check gaskets, seals, drain plug, and oil filter annually for slow drips before they become serious.

Use Correct Oil Viscosity

Use oil rated for your climate. Cold weather requires lower-viscosity oil for proper startup pressure.
