Do Not Immediately Restart — Listen First
CHECKDid the engine sound unusually loud or rev up before shutting down? This indicates a true mechanical overspeed — the governor could not control RPM.
Do not get left in the dark!
Generac PZ410
1200 / 1205 / 1208 — Overspeed Engine RPM exceeded the safe operating limit. The PZ410 monitors three distinct Overspeed conditions, each with a different trigger: 1200 — Prolonged: over 72 Hz for 3 seconds. 1205 — Instantaneous: over 75 Hz for 1 second — the manual specifically notes 'Possible causes: broken stepper wire.' 1208 — DPE Measured: frequency more than 20% above target for 5 seconds. All three result in immediate shutdown to prevent mechanical damage. The most common cause on the PZ410/XG series is a governor or throttle body issue. Broken, loose, or disconnected throttle/governor stepper wire (code 1205)Governor motor failure or stuck throttle bodySudden large load shed causing RPM spikeIncorrect governor gain parameters (IASD adjustment required)Fuel pressure surge — propane regulator issueDPE (voltage regulator) sensing fault triggering false overspeed (1208)Firmware issue — update may be required
Need a technician now? Skip the troubleshooting — open a service ticket and we'll handle it.
⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Always press OFF on the PZ410 before inspecting components — this prevents automatic starts. Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before touching wiring. This generator can auto-start.

Broken, loose, or disconnected throttle/governor stepper wire (code 1205)
Governor motor failure or stuck throttle body
Sudden large load shed causing RPM spike
Incorrect governor gain parameters (IASD adjustment required)
Fuel pressure surge — propane regulator issue
DPE (voltage regulator) sensing fault triggering false overspeed (1208)
Firmware issue — update may be required
Step-by-step workflow
Did the engine sound unusually loud or rev up before shutting down? This indicates a true mechanical overspeed — the governor could not control RPM.
Code 1205 specifically calls out a broken stepper wire. With the generator in OFF mode and battery disconnected, inspect the wiring harness running to the throttle body / governor motor.
On units with a mechanical governor component, inspect the governor arm, spring, and linkage rod for loose pins, broken springs, or binding.
If wiring and linkage are confirmed secure, clear the alarm and attempt a controlled restart with no load connected.
After reset
The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.
If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.
Prevention
Vibration over time loosens harness connectors and chafes wires. Check throttle body wiring at every annual service.
Throttle body and governor motor inspection should be part of every scheduled maintenance visit.

Any surging, hunting, or uneven RPM during the weekly test is an early overspeed warning.
Generac periodically releases firmware updates that address false overspeed trigger thresholds. Update via PZ410 Settings → Firmware Update.
Receive immediate Overspeed notifications via the Generac Mobile Link app.
Let A&A Power Generators handle all preventative maintenance for your Generac XG/Protector generator.
