Safety first

⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Always press OFF on the PZ410 before inspecting components — this prevents automatic starts. Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before touching wiring. This generator can auto-start.

Overview

What 2770 / 2780 means

Battery charger fault or no AC input. Battery will drain if unaddressed.

2770: Battery failing internally — cannot hold charge after full cycle

2770: Battery overcharging from external charger malfunction

2770: Charger fault at end of charge cycle — battery voltage still low

2780: Utility AC power to the generator not present (power outage when generator is in standby)

2780: Charger circuit breaker tripped inside generator cabinet

2780: Loose or broken wiring on the J7 charger connector (HOT and Neutral AC input)

2780: GFCI outlet tripped if generator power is connected through a GFCI circuit

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

Check Utility Power and Charger Breaker (2780 Priority)

CHECK

For code 2780, the charger is not receiving 120V AC. The most common cause is a tripped charger circuit breaker inside the generator cabinet.

Open the service panel and locate the charger breaker. Reset if tripped. Also confirm utility AC power is present at the generator's charger input — if the home lost utility power and the generator is in standby (not running), the charger has no power source. Code 2780 during a utility outage is expected and not a fault.
2

Inspect J7 Charger AC Input Connector

ACTION

The J7 connector (2-pin: HOT and Neutral) provides 120V AC to the internal charger from the utility. If this connector is loose or the wires are damaged, the charger loses its power source.

With generator in OFF mode and utility power confirmed, check the J7 connector for secure connection. Measure 120V AC at the J7 terminals if comfortable doing so. Note: there should be no J7 voltage when utility power is absent or during generator operation (charger is disabled while generator is running).
3

Test Battery Health (2770 Code)

ACTION

For code 2770, the battery is either overcharging (>16.1V) or failed (cannot reach 12.5V after 26 hours of charging). Perform a battery load test.

Navigate to Engine Screen Page 3: Battery Condition reading shows 'CHECK BATTERY' when the PZ410 has detected a problem. A battery that reads 12.6V at rest but drops to below 10V under a 100A load has a dead cell — replace it.
4

Clear Alarm and Monitor

RESET

After restoring AC input or replacing the battery, clear the alarm.

Alarm Screen → ↑/↓ → STOP + ENTER → press AUTO. Monitor Engine Screen Page 3 over the next 30 minutes — Charge Amps should be positive and decreasing as the battery charges toward 13.1–13.8V (float voltage). A charger working normally shows ~0.5–2.0A charge current during maintenance charging.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Prevention

Best practices and next checks

Confirm Charger AC Input Annually

At every service visit, verify the J7 charger connector is secure and 120V AC is available.

Replace Battery Every 3–5 Years

A failing battery causes 2770 — the charger cannot bring a dead cell battery to 12.5V regardless of charge time.

Install Surge Protection

A whole-home surge protector helps protect the PZ410 charger board from utility voltage spikes.

Check Charger Breaker Monthly

Make it a habit to glance at the charger breaker during any generator inspection.

Enable Mobile Link Alerts

2770 and 2780 warnings arrive via Mobile Link before the battery drains to a 2751 shutdown.
