Safety first

⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Always press OFF on the PZ410 before inspecting components — this prevents automatic starts. Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before touching wiring. This generator can auto-start.

Overview

What 1300 / 1301 means

Oil pressure below safe threshold. Check oil level immediately.

Low oil level — most common cause (oil burns off over time on liquid-cooled engines)

Wrong oil viscosity for current operating temperature

Degraded oil that has lost viscosity — overdue oil change

Faulty or stuck oil pressure sensor (false alarm)

Blocked oil filter or oil passage

Internal oil leak — gasket or seal failure

Oil pump failure (rare)

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

Check Oil Level IMMEDIATELY

CHECK

This is the first and most important action. Turn the generator OFF if running. With the engine OFF and on level ground, check the oil dipstick.

Oil level must be between MIN and MAX on the dipstick. Do not overfill — overfilling also causes issues. Use the correct oil per your XG series owner's manual (typically SAE 5W-30 synthetic for XG liquid-cooled units). If oil is BLACK or has a burnt smell — change it, do not just top off.
2

Inspect for External Oil Leaks

CHECK

Check around the engine, drain plug, oil filter, valve cover gasket, and beneath the generator for oil drips or pooling.

Common leak points on XG liquid-cooled engines: oil drain plug (loose or stripped), oil filter (undertorqued), valve cover gasket (dried on older units), front/rear crankshaft seals. Even a slow drip can drain oil significantly between weekly exercise cycles.
3

Check Oil Condition & Change if Needed

ACTION

Degraded oil loses viscosity and cannot maintain adequate pressure under load. If oil is dark, smells burnt, or the unit has exceeded its service interval — an oil change is required.

Generac recommends oil and filter changes every 200 hours or annually for the XG series. Use the Maintenance Log in the PZ410 Info Screen to check last service date. Always replace the oil filter at the same time.
4

Check Live Oil Pressure on PZ410 Display

ACTION

Navigate to Engine Screen → Page 2 to see live oil pressure in kPa while running. Normal operating oil pressure for XG engines is typically 200–550 kPa at operating temperature.

If oil level is confirmed correct and fresh but alarm persists: the oil pressure sensor may be faulty. Disconnect the sensor wire and attempt a brief monitored start — if alarm does not trigger and engine runs smoothly, replace the sensor. WARNING: Only do this with confirmed correct oil level.
5

Clear the Alarm

RESET

Only after correcting oil level, completing an oil change, or confirming sensor fault — clear the alarm.

Alarm Screen → ↑/↓ to scroll → STOP + ENTER to clear → press AUTO. Do not attempt to restart before confirming oil level is correct.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Prevention

Best practices and next checks

Check Oil Monthly

Check dipstick monthly and before every storm season. Never let oil drop below MIN.

Annual Oil & Filter Change

Change oil and filter every 200 hours or annually on XG series. Log the date in PZ410 Maintenance Log.

Inspect for Leaks

Check gaskets, seals, and drain plug at every service visit.
