Safety first

⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before inspecting internal components. Never work on a generator that may auto-start.

Overview

What 3700 / 3701 means

Engine coolant too hot. Check coolant level, radiator, thermostat, and fan.

Low coolant level — insufficient coolant to absorb and transfer heat

Blocked or clogged radiator (dirt, insects, debris on fins)

Failed thermostat stuck closed — coolant not circulating to radiator

Failed cooling fan or fan belt

Failed water pump — coolant not circulating

Air lock in the cooling system (bubble blocking coolant flow)

Radiator hose collapse under vacuum

Generator overloaded in high ambient temperature

Faulty coolant temperature sensor (false alarm)

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

Allow Full Cool-Down Before Any Inspection

CHECK

⚠️ HIGH TEMPERATURE DANGER: Allow at least 45–60 minutes of cooling before inspecting any cooling system components. Do not open the radiator cap.

The engine and coolant system remain dangerously hot long after shutdown. Radiator cap opening on a hot system can cause severe burns from pressurized steam.
2

Check Coolant Level (When Cold)

CHECK

Once fully cooled, check the overflow reservoir. Low coolant is the most common cause of high coolant temperature.

Reservoir should be between MIN and MAX. If low, top up with 50/50 premixed coolant. Check for external leaks (hoses, water pump, radiator core, head gasket area).
3

Inspect Radiator for Blockage

ACTION

The radiator must be clean to dissipate heat effectively. Insects, cottonwood, leaves, and dirt clogging the fins dramatically reduce cooling capacity.

With generator OFF, inspect the radiator fins from both sides. Use compressed air to blow out debris from the air-intake side. Do NOT use high-pressure water directly on the fins — use low pressure and blow from inside out.
4

Check Thermostat Operation

ACTION

A stuck-closed thermostat prevents coolant from flowing through the radiator. The engine overheats even with correct coolant level and a clean radiator.

Symptom: Engine reaches temperature quickly, upper radiator hose stays cold. Thermostat replacement is a technician-level repair. Contact A&A Power Generators for thermostat diagnosis and replacement.
5

Check Cooling Fan & Fan Belt

ACTION

The radiator fan must run any time coolant temperature exceeds the set point. A failed fan or broken/slipped belt will cause rapid overheating under load.

Visually inspect the fan belt for cracking, glazing, or slippage. Confirm the fan spins freely by hand (engine off, battery disconnected). A seized fan bearing will be obvious — the fan will not rotate.
6

Clear Fault & Monitor Carefully

RESET

Only after full cool-down and addressing the root cause should you clear the fault and restart.

Evolution: Press OFF/Reset. Nexus: Press OFF → Enter. Watch the coolant temperature gauge closely after restart. If temperature rises abnormally fast (within 5 minutes of startup) — shut down immediately and call for service.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Prevention

Best practices and next checks

Monthly Coolant Level Check

Inspect overflow reservoir monthly. Consistent level loss indicates a slow but serious leak.

Clear Radiator Fins Seasonally

Blow out debris from radiator fins every spring and fall — especially in cottonwood or high-pollen areas.

Replace Thermostat Every 5 Years

Thermostats fail silently. Proactive replacement prevents unexpected overheating shutdowns.

Don't Overload in High Heat

On hot days, keep generator load below 70% of rated capacity — ambient heat reduces cooling effectiveness.
