Safety first

⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before inspecting internal components. Never work on a generator that may auto-start.

Overview

What 2770 means

Built-in battery charger is failing or not receiving power. Battery will drain.

Battery charger circuit breaker tripped (most common, easiest fix)

No 120V AC utility power reaching the charger input

Failed battery charger board

Battery has shorted internally, overloading the charger

Corroded or loose wiring on the charger circuit

Lightning strike or surge damaged the charger

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

Check Charger Circuit Breaker

CHECK

The battery charger circuit breaker is located inside the generator's control cabinet. This is the most common cause — it trips silently and is easy to miss.

Open the control panel cover. Locate the small circuit breaker labeled 'Battery Charger' or 'Charger'. If tripped, it will be in the middle (tripped) position. Reset by pushing fully to OFF, then to ON. If it trips again immediately — the charger has a fault. Do not continue resetting.
2

Verify 120V AC Utility Power at Charger Input

CHECK

The built-in charger requires 120V AC from the utility (house power). If utility power is out or the input is wired incorrectly, the charger cannot function.

With a multimeter, measure voltage at the charger's AC input terminals. Should read 120V AC when utility power is present. Zero volts = no utility power reaching the charger — check upstream wiring and breakers.
3

Check Battery Condition

ACTION

A battery with an internal short can draw excess current and trip the charger breaker. Test the battery voltage and perform a load test if possible.

A battery that reads 12.6V at rest but drops below 10V under load has a dead cell. Replace the battery before further troubleshooting the charger — a bad battery can damage an otherwise functional charger.
4

Inspect Charger Wiring

ACTION

Corroded or loose wiring connections on the charger circuit prevent proper operation.

Inspect wiring from the charger board to the battery terminals. Check for corrosion, loose ring terminals, or chafed insulation. Charger board replacement is a technician-level repair.
5

Clear Warning & Monitor

RESET

After correcting the root cause, clear the warning code and monitor battery voltage over the next 48 hours to confirm the charger is maintaining charge.

Evolution: Press OFF/Reset. Nexus: Press OFF → Enter. Check battery voltage after 24 hours — should be 13.1–13.8V (charger float voltage). If battery is not rising or holding charge, charger board replacement is needed.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Prevention

Best practices and next checks

Annual Charger Verification

Test charger output voltage annually (should read 13.1–13.8V DC with battery connected).

Replace Battery Every 3–5 Years

A degraded battery draws excessive charge current and stresses the charger board.

Install Surge Protection

Utility voltage spikes can damage charger boards. A whole-home surge protector helps protect the generator charger.
