Safety first

⚠ SAFETY FIRST: Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before inspecting internal components. Never work on a generator that may auto-start.

Overview

What 1501 / 1505 means

Controller cannot detect engine rotation. Weak battery, speed sensor, or ignition coil fault.

Weak or dead 12V battery (most common cause)

Failed or misadjusted magnetic pickup sensor (MPU / speed sensor)

Ignition coil failure — engine cranks but does not fire

Loose or corroded wiring on speed sensor circuit

Faulty starter motor delivering inconsistent crank speed

Controller firmware issue with speed sensing threshold

Damaged flywheel ring gear teeth

Step-by-step workflow

Follow the diagnostic and reset sequence

1

Check Battery Voltage & Condition

CHECK

A weak battery cranks too slowly to generate a reliable speed sensor signal. This is the first and most important check for RPM Sense Loss.

Measure battery voltage: 12.6V+ = healthy. Below 12.0V = charge or replace. Battery older than 4–5 years = replace proactively. Also verify battery terminals are clean and tight.
2

Inspect Speed Sensor / Magnetic Pickup

ACTION

The magnetic pickup sensor (MPU) or crankshaft position sensor monitors engine rotation. If it fails or loses its air gap, the controller sees no speed signal.

Location: Near the flywheel ring gear at the engine end. Correct air gap: 0.030–0.050 inches between sensor tip and ring gear. Test: During cranking, measure AC voltage at sensor leads — should read ~1–3V AC. No signal = sensor failed.
3

Check Ignition Coils

ACTION

If the engine cranks normally but never fires, the ignition coil(s) may have failed. No spark = no combustion = RPM sense loss as engine decelerates without firing.

With plugs removed, test for spark: connect a spark tester and crank the engine. No spark on one or both cylinders indicates a failed ignition coil. Ignition coils on air-cooled Generac engines are relatively inexpensive and simple to replace.
4

Inspect Wiring Harness on Speed Sensor Circuit

ACTION

Vibration over time can loosen or chafe the wiring between the speed sensor and controller. A broken wire or oxidized connector pin will interrupt the signal.

Trace the sensor wiring back to the controller harness connector. Unplug, inspect for corrosion or pushed-back pins, and reseat firmly.
5

Clear Fault & Test

RESET

After correcting the root cause, clear the fault and attempt a restart.

Evolution: Press OFF/Reset. Nexus: Press OFF → Enter. If the alarm returns: Note exactly when — immediately on crank (battery/sensor) or after cranking begins (ignition/wiring). This helps narrow the diagnosis.

After reset

Did the code clear?

Yes — code cleared

The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.

No — code returned

If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.

Prevention

Best practices and next checks

Replace Battery Every 3–5 Years

Battery is the #1 RPM Sense Loss cause. Proactive replacement prevents outage-time failures.

Annual Ignition Service

Inspect and replace spark plugs and ignition coils per service schedule. Coil failure is silent until it fails.

Inspect Speed Sensor Annually

Air gap check and wiring inspection should be part of every annual service visit.
