Do Not Attempt Immediate Restart
CHECKAn Overspeed shutdown indicates a potentially serious mechanical condition. Do not repeatedly attempt to restart without inspecting the governor system first — overspeed can cause engine damage.

Engine speed exceeded the safe operating limit. Usually a governor failure or linkage issue.

âš SAFETY FIRST: Disconnect battery (negative lead first) before inspecting internal components. Never work on a generator that may auto-start.
Overview
Engine speed exceeded the safe operating limit. Usually a governor failure or linkage issue.
Stuck or failed governor — most common cause
Governor linkage loose, disconnected, or binding
Governor motor failure (stepper motor on Evolution-controlled units)
Sudden large load shed (e.g., large appliance turns off abruptly)
Incorrect governor sensitivity settings in the controller
Fuel delivery surge (propane pressure spike)
Controller firmware issue triggering false overspeed reading
Step-by-step workflow
An Overspeed shutdown indicates a potentially serious mechanical condition. Do not repeatedly attempt to restart without inspecting the governor system first — overspeed can cause engine damage.
The governor linkage connects the governor arm to the throttle. If a spring is loose, broken, or the linkage has slipped off, the throttle can open uncontrolled.
On Evolution controllers, the governor sensitivity (gain) parameter may be set incorrectly, causing the engine to hunt and overshoot. A Kohler/Generac technician can adjust these parameters.
If governor linkage is confirmed secure and no mechanical issues are found, clear the fault and attempt a controlled restart with no load connected.
After reset
The code cleared and the unit returned to standby. Log the incident, confirm ready-to-run status, and monitor the next exercise cycle.
If the code returns immediately, stop resetting and move into service. The issue likely needs inspection of wiring, switches, or a controller-level component.
Prevention
Have the governor linkage, spring, and motor inspected annually. A sticking governor is hard to catch without hands-on service.
A weak battery causes slow cranking which can cause an RPM spike at ignition, triggering a false overspeed.
A&A Power Generators will inspect governor operation during every preventative maintenance visit. 888-991-4500
Listen during weekly exercise cycles. Any surging, hunting, or uneven RPM is an early governor warning sign.
Propane pressure spikes (especially from an overfull tank in warm weather) can cause fuel surges. Maintain proper tank levels.
