  1. Efficiently Operating Your Diesel Generator

Most equipment will eventually require replacing after a couple of years, but there is no need to replace equipment than necessary. Hence, it’s imperative to run your generator(s) efficiently to extend its life and ensure proper operation when it’s needed.

Improperly running a generator is not like running a car that is overdue for a change in oil. While it is possible to go beyond the recommended distance before changing your oil, running a generator without maintaining it will inevitably shorten its lifespan.

For load settings, it all depends on the type of generator. Standby and diesel-powered generators, for example, are optimized for operating at fifty to eighty percent of total load rating while diesel generators that are continuously rated do typically best at fifty to eighty percent of total load rating.

It will affect the health of your equipment by running your generator on a light load for extended periods. It is likely to result in unplanned downtime, more expensive maintenance costs, reduced fuel efficiency, and the generator’s overall shorter service life. Remaining within its guidelines for optimum load bearing is vital to the output of the diesel generator.

  2. A Brief Look at No-Load Testing

A robust system of preventive maintenance is essential to a standby generator’s reliability. An integral part of good maintenance practices is generator load bank checking. Performing annual load bank tests helps extend the engine life of the generator and ensure reliable operation during a power failure of the utility.

While we’ve extensively discussed load bank testing and its importance, there is also another type of testing worth discussing called no-load testing. Many generator owners exercise their unloaded standby generators regularly but don’t often test them with building loads, depending on the occasional loss of utilities to conduct the test. This can trigger “wet stacking” for generator sets powered by diesel engines. The engine may not achieve its optimal operating temperature while exercising a generator or running it for short-term outages while it’s not fully loaded. The unburned fuel accumulates when this is allowed to continue for long periods and can be detrimental to the performance and life span of the engines.

  3. New Rules for Meter-Mounted Transfer Switches

New changes were added towards the end of last year aimed at addressing the use of meter-mounted transfer switches in optional standby systems. If they meet the requirements for automatic transfer switches, these switches must be manual transfer switches. UL1008M is the listing format for manual or automatic transfer switches. Usually, the manual model is designed to connect the meter-mounted transfer switch to a cable. In many instances, these machines are installed and operated by the electrical utility, and for the meter-mounted conversion switch, consumers will see a monthly rental fee on their electricity bill. This device significantly simplifies the optional standby system installation of a dwelling unit.

There are exceptions to this new rule. Temporary connection of a portable generator without transfer equipment is allowed where maintenance and monitoring conditions ensure that the installation is serviced only by qualified persons and where the normal supply is physically isolated by a lockable disconnection or disconnection of the normal supply conductors.

  4. The Load Bank Testing Procedure

If you’ve been reading our blogs, we’ve looked at load bank testing and how often it should be done. Today we’re examining pre-testing procedures to take into account as you implement load bank testing into your regular operations.

It is important to follow a checklist of best practices during the testing process. This ensures safety for both the test worker while preventing the odds that major power outage will occur during the testing procedure. Though the testing procedure isn’t itself complicated, it does take knowledge to properly perform.

Starting and operating the generator, the technician continues until water temperature stabilization occurs. All manual or automatic switches are then moved to the source of the emergency. The generator will then be loaded step by step with the load bank before reaching the desired load point. The technician removes the load bank load first after the check and transfers all switches back to the normal position before allowing the generator to cool down per the instructions of the manufacturer.

  5. When Should Load Bank Testing Be Performed?

In previous blogs, we’ve discussed the importance of load bank testing to ensure the generator will continue to operate efficiently while being capable of handling significant loads in situations such as a power outage. This leads to the question: how often should load bank testing be performed?

The general rule of thumb when it comes to load bank testing frequency is to do it once a year at the very least as this allows you to evaluate the performance of a generator. However, there may be certain scenarios where you can do this less often. Let’s explain.

The first thing you want to do is to figure out how your diesel-powered generator’s monthly usage. Does it carry out its nominal plate kW rating load over or below thirty percent during regular monthly operating cycles?

If your generator runs at least 30 minutes per month at 30 percent or more of its nameplate kW score, load banks may not need to be deployed for testing. Nonetheless, you should consider seeking the advice of experts in a load bank company before making this decision. To develop the right testing strategy for your service, a generator load bank testing expert will assess your plant, systems, equipment, and specifications.

On the other hand, if your generator runs for at least 30 minutes per month for less than 30 percent of its nameplate kW value, you must use load banks to produce an artificial load for performance testing each year.

  6. The Importance of Load Bank Testing

An emergency generator set will deliver reliable power to a facility or commercial operation should a situation occur where power is lost. You should have peace of mind in the event of a power outage that your backup power source will kick into action the instant the power goes out. However, what happens if there is a loss of power and the generator doesn’t do its job? Often the outcome can be costly and sometimes disastrous.

This is why load bank testing is a critical component of a comprehensive preventative generator maintenance plan. Load bank testing ensures the generator will work as necessary while being capable of handling the highest possible load needed.

With a load bank test, an artificial load will be placed on the generator. The test is timed and the kW will incrementally increase. Each time this load is increased, engine and alternator parameters are recorded. The test will evaluate the generator’s ability to manage this boost as well as its ability to operate at high levels for an extended period.

Load bank testing has numerous benefits. Among them, it allows problems to be discovered before they become a major issue, it ensures that the system can perform under heavy loads, and it also prevents wet-stacking. Wet stacking occurs when diesel-powered generators are not regularly used or only operate on light loads, resulting in unburned fuel and a build-up of soot in the exhaust system.
